Overview

Etybenzatropine is an anticholinergic drug structurally related to benztropine. Like benztropine, it is presumed to act primarily as a muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist in the central nervous system, reducing the effects of acetylcholine and thereby helping to restore the balance between dopamine and acetylcholine. This mechanism is useful in treating symptoms of Parkinson's disease and drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms. Etybenzatropine may also have some antihistaminic properties due to its structural similarity with other tropane derivatives.
