Eucalyptus citriodora (also known as Corymbia citriodora or "lemon-scented gum") is a tree native to Australia. The leaves are the source of an essential oil rich in citronellal and other compounds. The primary medicinal use of its leaf extract and oils is as a natural insect repellent—especially for mosquitoes—due to the presence of p-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD), which masks environmental cues used by insects to locate hosts[1][2][6]. Lemon eucalyptus oil also exhibits antifungal and antibacterial properties and has been traditionally used for joint pain relief, osteoarthritis management, respiratory infections (such as coughs and colds), wound healing, and as an anti-inflammatory agent[1][5][7]. Some studies suggest antidiabetic effects via stimulation of insulin secretion/action and inhibition of DPP-IV activity; however, these uses are not well established in clinical practice[5]. Commercially available products may contain either natural or synthetic PMD derived from this species.
