Eucalyptus oil is a distilled essential oil derived from the leaves of Eucalyptus trees, primarily Eucalyptus globulus. It is widely used for its medicinal properties including as a cough suppressant, decongestant for nasal congestion and asthma, topical analgesic for arthritis and muscular pain, and as an antimicrobial agent. The primary active component in many preparations is 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), which can comprise up to 80% or more of the oil. Eucalyptus oil exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by modulating immune responses and inhibiting cytokine production in vitro; it also demonstrates antibacterial activity against certain bacterial species. The exact mechanism of action remains incompletely understood but may involve inhibition of prostaglandin and cytokine formation by monocytes[1][2]. Eucalyptol is also commonly used in mouthwashes and cold remedies. Eucalyptus oil must be diluted before use; ingestion at full strength can be toxic[4]. It interacts with several medications metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP1A2/2C19/2C9/3A4) and may lower blood sugar levels when combined with antidiabetic drugs[5][8]. Used both topically and via inhalation; not recommended for oral ingestion due to toxicity risk.
