Eucarbon

Eucarbon is a traditional, natural intestinal regulator and mild laxative originally developed in 1909 by the Austrian pharmaceutical company F. Trenka. It is formulated as a combination of non-activated vegetable charcoal, senna leaves, rhubarb root extract, and purified sulfur. The drug exerts a dual mechanism of action: the vegetable charcoal acts as an adsorbent to bind gases, toxins, and bacterial byproducts in the intestine, while the anthraquinone glycosides (sennosides) from senna and rhubarb stimulate intestinal peristalsis and promote water secretion into the lumen to facilitate bowel evacuation. Purified sulfur provides a mild disinfectant effect in the gastrointestinal tract. Eucarbon is primarily indicated for the treatment of constipation, abdominal bloating, flatulence, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). In some markets, such as Italy, Giuliani Pharma distributes updated formulations (like Eucarbon R.I.) that replace senna, rhubarb, and sulfur with ginger and dandelion.
