Overview
Eucommia bark, the dried bark of *Eucommia ulmoides* Oliver, is a staple of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) known as Du Zhong. It is traditionally used to tonify the liver and kidneys and strengthen the bones and muscles. In modern clinical research, such as trials conducted by Guizhou Medical University, it is being investigated for its potential to treat endemic skeletal fluorosis, a condition caused by excessive fluoride intake. The bark contains bioactive constituents like lignans (e.g., pinoresinol diglucoside), iridoids, and phenolics, which exhibit osteoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Its therapeutic effect in fluorosis is believed to involve the regulation of bone remodeling and the reduction of oxidative stress in bone tissue.
