Overview

Eucommia ulmoides, commonly known as Du Zhong in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is a botanical extract derived from the bark of the Eucommia tree. It is primarily utilized for its antihypertensive properties, particularly in the management of essential hypertension. The extract contains a variety of bioactive compounds, including lignans (such as pinoresinol diglucoside), iridoids (such as geniposidic acid), and phenolics (such as chlorogenic acid). Its mechanism of action involves the promotion of nitric oxide (NO) release to induce vasodilation and the potential inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity. Clinical research, including Phase 4 studies, has focused on its ability to restore normal 24-hour blood pressure rhythms (circadian dipping patterns) and reduce blood pressure variability in patients who do not respond adequately to standard antihypertensive therapies.
