Overview

Eucommia ulmoides bark, commonly known as Du Zhong, is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) derived from the dried bark of the Eucommia ulmoides tree. It has been used for over two millennia to treat conditions such as hypertension, osteoporosis, diabetes, and inflammatory disorders. The bark contains a diverse array of bioactive compounds, including lignans (e.g., liriodendrin), iridoids (e.g., aucubin, geniposidic acid), phenolics, and flavonoids. Pharmacological studies suggest that it operates through multiple mechanisms, including the inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators like COX-2, TNF-α, and IL-6, as well as the modulation of gut microbiota and metabolic pathways. It is typically available as a botanical extract in over-the-counter dietary supplements and traditional herbal formulations.
