Eugenia uniflora dentifrice

This experimental dentifrice is a plant-based oral care product developed by researchers at the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) in Brazil. The formulation contains a 3.0% hydroalcoholic extract derived from the ripe fruit of *Eugenia uniflora* L., commonly known as Surinam cherry or pitanga. It is designed to treat gingivitis, particularly in pediatric populations, by utilizing the natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of the extract. The dentifrice targets common oral pathogens such as *Streptococcus mutans*, *Streptococcus oralis*, and *Lactobacillus casei*. In a Phase II clinical trial involving children aged 10-12 years, the product demonstrated significant anti-gingivitis efficacy, reducing gingival bleeding to a degree comparable to triclosan-based controls, although it did not show a significant reduction in dental plaque accumulation.
