Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Eugenia uniflora L. leaf extract (EEu), derived from the leaves of the pitangueira tree native to Brazil, is a botanical extract under preclinical investigation for its neuroprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. Phytochemical characterization of the extract has identified several bioactive compounds, including myricetrin, oleanolic acid, pygenic acids A and B, quinic acid, galloyl-HHDP-glucose, and lauric acid. In silico target fishing and in vitro assays suggest that these bioactives interact with key Parkinson's disease-related targets, such as caspase-3 (CASP3), monoamine oxidase B (MAOB), cAMP-dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit alpha (PRKACA), and Janus kinase 3 (JAK3). Preclinical studies demonstrate that the extract exerts multifactorial neuroprotective effects by direct antioxidant action, modulating inflammatory responses, and preserving cell viability under neurotoxic conditions, making it a promising candidate for central nervous system disorders like Parkinson's disease.
