Overview

This combination therapy is used in vital pulp therapy (pulpotomy) for primary molars affected by pulpitis. The procedure involves the application of ferric sulfate, a hemostatic agent that controls bleeding by forming a ferric ion-protein complex that occludes capillary orifices through protein precipitation. Following hemostasis, a base of zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE), typically in the form of IRM (Intermediate Restorative Material), is applied over the treated pulp tissue. Eugenol provides sedative and antimicrobial effects, though its potential to cause internal resorption has led to clinical comparisons with non-eugenol alternatives. A randomized controlled trial at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) specifically compared this ZOE-based regimen against a non-eugenol zinc oxide material (Cavit) to evaluate clinical and radiographic success in children.
