EUK-134 is a synthetic small molecule antioxidant that functions as a dual mimetic of the enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. As a manganese-salen complex, it is designed to neutralize a broad spectrum of reactive oxygen species (ROS), including superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and peroxynitrite, thereby protecting cells from oxidative stress. Originally developed by Eukarion, EUK-134 has been extensively investigated in preclinical research for potential therapeutic applications in neuroprotection (such as stroke and Alzheimer's disease), ischemia-reperfusion injury, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Although it has shown significant efficacy in various animal models, it has not progressed to human clinical trials for pharmaceutical use. However, it has gained commercial prominence as an active ingredient in high-end cosmetic formulations due to its potent anti-aging and skin-protective properties.
