Overview

EUK-189 is a synthetic, lipophilic salen-manganese complex that functions as a catalytic scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Developed by Eukarion, Inc. (later acquired by Proteome Systems), it is designed to mimic the activity of two key endogenous antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. Unlike stoichiometric antioxidants, EUK-189 acts catalytically, allowing it to neutralize multiple ROS molecules without being consumed. Its lipophilic nature enables it to penetrate cellular membranes and the blood-brain barrier, providing neuroprotective effects. Preclinical research has demonstrated that EUK-189 can reverse age-related cognitive deficits and reduce oxidative stress in the brain. It has been investigated for its therapeutic potential in various oxidative stress-related conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease and the mitigation of radiation-induced injury.
