Overview

Euonymus alatus, commonly known as the winged spindle tree or Guijianyu in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is a deciduous woody shrub native to East Asia. It is widely utilized for its broad spectrum of pharmacological activities, including antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and neuroprotective properties. The therapeutic effects of Euonymus alatus are attributed to its diverse phytochemical composition, which includes flavonoids such as quercetin, kaempferol, and naringenin, as well as phenolic acids and steroids like stigmast-4-en-3-one. Mechanistically, extracts from the plant have been shown to activate the Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1 antioxidant pathway, inhibit alpha-glucosidase, and modulate key signaling cascades such as PI3K/AKT, MAPK, and VEGF. Research indicates its potential in treating diabetic complications like retinopathy and kidney disease, managing rheumatoid arthritis, and mitigating cognitive deficits associated with Alzheimer's disease by restoring cholinergic function and BDNF/ERK/CREB signaling.
