Overview

Eupatilin is a naturally occurring flavonoid (trimethoxyflavone) isolated from various Artemisia species and other plants. It exhibits anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, and antineoplastic activities. Mechanistically, eupatilin acts as an inhibitor of arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase (EC 1.13.11.34), thereby reducing leukotriene synthesis and inflammation[2][8]. It also suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as IL‑1β, TNF‑α, IL‑6, IL‑8) and inhibits the PI3K/NF‑κB signaling pathway in gastric epithelial cells infected with Helicobacter pylori[7][8]. Eupatilin has been studied for its protective effects against gastrointestinal lesions and bleeding—especially in the context of NSAID or aspirin use—and for its potential anticancer properties through induction of apoptosis in cancer cells[4][10].
