Overview

Euphorbia ebracteolata Hayata is a perennial herb in the Euphorbiaceae family, traditionally used in Chinese medicine (where its dried root is called "langdu") and distributed across China, Korea, and Japan. It has been used to treat edema, skin ulcers, abdominal distension, cough, asthma, tuberculosis swelling and other diseases. The plant contains various bioactive compounds including terpenoids (notably diterpenes such as ingenanes and rosane diterpenoids), acetophenones (such as ECB/2,4-dihydroxy-6-methoxy-3-methylacetophenone), flavonoids, baccatin derivatives and others. Extracts and isolated compounds from E. ebracteolata have demonstrated pharmacological activities such as anticancer (including anti-melanoma activity via inhibition of angiogenesis), anti-inflammatory (notably through suppression of NF-κB activation by compounds like ebractenoid F), antiviral, antimicrobial effects and antidiabetic potential attributed to antioxidant properties. Some constituents also show cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines; however the plant is reported to have toxicity concerns[1][4][7][8][10].
