Overview

Euphorbia kansui is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb derived from the dried root of *Euphorbia kansui* T. N. Liou ex T. P. Wang. It has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine, primarily for treating conditions like edema, ascites, and asthma. The plant contains various bioactive compounds including triterpenes, diterpenes, flavonoids, phenolics, and acids. Among these, diterpenes and triterpenoids are the main compounds responsible for its pharmacological activities. **Pharmacological Actions:** * **Anti-edema and diuretic effects**: Relieves water retention and congestion of fluids. * **Anti-inflammatory properties**: Cools swellings and reduces inflammation. * **Anti-cancer potential**: Compounds show moderate cytotoxicity against colon, gastric, and breast cancer cell lines. * **Anti-viral activity**: Potential in reactivating latent HIV. * **Anti-obesity effects**: May modulate adipose tissue macrophages and gut microbiota. **Traditional Uses:** Classified as a "cathartic herb that drains downward" with a cold nature and bitter taste. Used for ascites, edema, asthma, bronchitis, chest congestion, fluid retention, sores, abscesses, and constipation. **Safety Concerns:** * Strongly toxic to the liver and kidneys. * Can cause diarrhea, stomachache, dehydration, and respiratory failure. * Traditionally incompatible with licorice (Gan cao). * Should not be used by pregnant women or people with stomach or intestinal disorders. Processing methods, such as stir-baking with vinegar, are used to reduce toxicity.
