Overview

Euphorbia kansui extract is a botanical preparation derived from the dried root of Euphorbia kansui, a perennial plant in the family Euphorbiaceae native to Asia. Traditionally used in Chinese medicine for conditions such as edema, ascites, asthma, diabetes, and certain cancers[1][4][5][8]. The extract contains various bioactive compounds including diterpenes (notably ingenols), triterpenes (such as tirucalla-8,24-diene-3β,11β-diol-7-one and eupha-8,24-diene-3β,11β-diol-7-one), flavonoids and phenolic acids[6][9]. Mechanistically: - It has demonstrated immunomodulatory effects by regulating Th17 cell differentiation and reducing inflammatory cytokines like IL-17A in models of psoriasis[1]. - It can activate T cells via protein kinase C agonism (ingenol derivatives) and reactivate latent HIV expression in CD4+ T cells—making it a candidate for "shock-and-kill" strategies against HIV reservoirs[10][8]. - Animal studies suggest anti-obesity effects through modulation of adipose tissue macrophages and gut microbiota profiles[2]. The product is available as tinctures or powders prepared using ethanol or glycerin extraction methods. Safety data indicate that traditional doses are generally well tolerated but higher doses may cause gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea; use during pregnancy is contraindicated[4][7].
