Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Euphrasia (commonly known as eyebright) is an herb traditionally used in European folk medicine for a variety of eye-related conditions such as conjunctivitis and eye irritation. The plant contains several bioactive compounds including flavonoids (luteolin and quercetin), iridoids (notably aucubin), phenolic acids, and essential oils. These constituents are believed to contribute to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial and antihistamine properties[1][2][3]. In traditional use—both herbal and homeopathic—euphrasia preparations have been applied topically or taken orally for symptoms like watery eyes from allergies or colds. However, there is insufficient scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for any medical condition[1][5][6]. Regulatory bodies such as the HMPC and Commission E do not recommend its use due to lack of proven benefit; some anthroposophic medicines in Germany still include it for non-purulent conjunctivitis[6]. Euphrasia is also used in homeopathy for various mucous membrane complaints[4][7].
