Overview

European Viper Venom Antiserum is an equine-derived polyvalent biological product developed by the Institute of Immunology (IMZ) in Zagreb for the treatment of snake envenomation. It is specifically designed to neutralize the venoms of several medically significant European vipers, including the nose-horned viper (*Vipera ammodytes*), common adder (*Vipera berus*), asp viper (*Vipera aspis*), Ottoman viper (*Vipera xanthina*), and Levantine viper (*Vipera lebetina*). The antiserum contains polyclonal antibodies, typically purified as F(ab')2 fragments from the plasma of horses immunized with these specific venoms. These antibodies work by binding to and neutralizing various toxic components within the venom, such as phospholipases A2 and proteases, thereby preventing systemic toxicity and local tissue damage. The program is currently in a preclinical phase aimed at revitalizing manufacturing processes to ensure the continued availability of this essential therapeutic.
