Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Europenem is a carbapenem antibiotic distributed by AAR Pharma in Ukraine, containing ertapenem as its active pharmaceutical ingredient. As a small molecule beta-lactam, it functions by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. This binding inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, preventing the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains and effectively halting bacterial cell wall synthesis, which leads to cell lysis and death. Europenem is effective against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe bacterial infections, including intra-abdominal infections, community-acquired pneumonia, and complicated urinary tract infections.
