Eusol

Eusol (Edinburgh University Solution of Lime) is a traditional antiseptic solution primarily used for the management of infected wounds, ulcers, and burns. It is a combination of chlorinated lime (calcium hypochlorite) and boric acid, which together release hypochlorous acid, a potent oxidizing agent. This mechanism provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses while assisting in the debridement of necrotic tissue (slough separation). Developed at the University of Edinburgh during World War I, it remains in clinical use, particularly in resource-limited settings or for specific wound care protocols, though it has been largely superseded by more modern dressings in some regions. It is applied topically as a solution or wet dressing.
