Overview

Euterpe oleracea dye is a natural vital stain derived from the anthocyanin-rich fruit of the Acai palm, primarily investigated for its application in chromovitrectomy. The dye contains high concentrations of anthocyanins, such as cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside, which provide deep purple pigmentation that facilitates the visualization of intraocular membranes. In ophthalmic surgery, it is applied to the vitreous cavity to stain the internal limiting membrane (ILM) and posterior hyaloid, creating the necessary contrast for surgeons to perform precise membrane peeling. Developed as a biocompatible alternative to synthetic dyes like indocyanine green (ICG) and brilliant blue G (BBG), it aims to reduce the risk of retinal pigment epithelium toxicity while maintaining high diagnostic efficacy. Clinical studies, particularly in Brazil, have focused on its safety and effectiveness in patients undergoing surgery for macular holes and epiretinal membranes.
