Overview

Euvichol-Plus is a bivalent, inactivated, whole-cell oral cholera vaccine (OCV) designed for the prevention of cholera caused by Vibrio cholerae serogroups O1 and O139. It contains killed whole cells of V. cholerae O1 (Inaba and Ogawa serotypes, both classical and El Tor biotypes) and V. cholerae O139, inactivated by heat or formalin. The vaccine is administered orally in two doses at least two weeks apart to individuals aged one year and older. Euvichol-Plus does not require a buffer solution for administration, simplifying logistics compared to some other oral vaccines[2][6][7]. Its mechanism of action involves stimulating mucosal immunity in the gut against Vibrio cholerae infection through exposure to the killed bacteria[2][3]. Developed as an improved formulation over earlier versions (notably with thimerosal removed), it is supplied in plastic tubes for easier storage, transport, administration, and waste management—features that make it particularly suitable for mass vaccination campaigns during outbreaks or humanitarian emergencies[8]. Clinical studies have demonstrated its safety profile and effectiveness comparable to other WHO-prequalified oral cholera vaccines such as Shanchol[3].
