Overview

The EV71-CA16 bivalent hand-foot-mouth disease vaccine is a prophylactic vaccine candidate developed by AIM Vaccine Co. to prevent hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD). It is an inactivated vaccine designed to provide broad protection against the two primary causative agents of HFMD: Enterovirus 71 (EV71) and Coxsackievirus A16 (CA16). While monovalent EV71 vaccines are currently available and effective against EV71-related HFMD, they do not offer cross-protection against CA16, which is a major contributor to the disease burden and often co-circulates during outbreaks. This bivalent formulation aims to address this gap by inducing neutralizing antibodies against both viral serotypes. As of 2024, the candidate is in the preclinical development stage.
