Overview

**Evizon (squalamine lactate)** is a small molecule aminosterol developed by Genaera Corporation for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD), a leading cause of vision loss. It acts by inhibiting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and other angiogenic factors, disrupting pathological neovascularization in the eye. Administered intravenously, Phase II trials showed dose-dependent stabilization or improvement in bilateral visual acuity, particularly in patients with advanced disease in fellow eyes; however, Phase III development was terminated in 2007 due to insufficient vision improvement compared to emerging standards like Lucentis (ranibizumab), slow enrollment, and lack of partnering interest.
