Their mechanism involves modulation of multiple key neurological receptors implicated in mental health disorders, including the alpha-2A adrenergic receptor (ADRA2A), serotonin 5-HT2C receptor, dopamine transporter (DAT), and potentially serotonin 5-HT2A receptor. The primary indications under development are depression, anxiety disorders, addiction/substance use disorders, opioid withdrawal management, and ADHD. Preclinical data suggest these agents can promote clinically relevant neuroplasticity without inducing hallucinations—a major limitation for traditional psychedelic therapies—potentially enabling broader outpatient use for mental health conditions[1][3][4][5][6][7].
