Overview

EVQ-218 is a novel, inhaled therapeutic nanoparticle developed for the treatment of pulmonary bacterial infections, particularly in patients with cystic fibrosis. It is characterized as a new form of silver—specifically, a non-ionic, pure silver nanoparticle with an ultrastable shell structure that prevents ion emission and cytotoxicity. Unlike conventional nanosilver agents that kill bacteria by rupturing cell walls (often triggering antimicrobial resistance), EVQ-218 infiltrates bacterial cells and sequesters sulfur, disrupting metabolic pathways from within without damaging the cell wall. This unique mechanism neutralizes the bacteria’s energy source and disables their metabolism, leading to cell death without activating resistance pathways or sending warning signals to other bacteria. Preclinical studies have shown efficacy against major antibiotic-resistant pathogens identified by WHO—including Acinetobacter baumannii (CR), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CR), Escherichia coli (3GCR), Klebsiella spp. (3GCR/CR), and Enterobacter spp. (SGCR). The drug is being advanced toward Phase 1 clinical trials for cystic fibrosis-related lung infections[1][2][5][6][7].
