Overview

EVX-101 is a proprietary, oral, gastroretentive, slow-release tablet formulation that combines 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), the natural immediate precursor to serotonin, with low-dose carbidopa. The drug uses a novel sustained-release technology to ensure prolonged delivery of both components over approximately eight hours in the upper intestine. Carbidopa acts as a peripheral L-aromatic amino acid decarboxylase inhibitor, protecting 5-HTP from first-pass metabolism and thereby increasing its systemic bioavailability. This mechanism enables sustained amplification of brain serotonin synthesis. EVX-101 is being developed primarily as an adjunctive treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in patients who have not responded adequately to first-line selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). It may also have potential utility in other central nervous system disorders[1][2][3][4][5][6].
