EW02 is a polysaccharide-enriched crude extract derived from black soybean (BS; *Glycine max* L. Merr). Historically utilized in traditional Chinese medicine for various conditions, this specific extract was developed as a supportive therapeutic to mitigate chemotherapy-induced neutropenia and leukopenia. Its mechanism of action is centered on immunomodulation, where it is hypothesized to stimulate myelopoiesis by inducing the production of hematopoietic cytokines such as granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), thereby increasing blood progenitor cell counts. While EW02 showed promise in preclinical in vivo models by reducing neutropenia in mice treated with 5-fluorouracil, a Phase II double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy (AC or CAF regimens) found that EW02 was well-tolerated but failed to demonstrate significant efficacy in accelerating myelopoiesis recovery or increasing serum cytokine levels.
