Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Exalgo is an extended-release, once-daily oral formulation of hydromorphone hydrochloride, a semi-synthetic opioid analgesic. It utilizes the OROS (Osmotic Release Oral System) delivery technology, which employs osmotic pressure to deliver the drug at a controlled rate through a laser-drilled orifice. This mechanism ensures stable plasma concentrations over a 24-hour period, reducing the "peak-and-trough" effect common with immediate-release formulations. Developed by Mallinckrodt, Exalgo is indicated for the management of moderate to severe pain in opioid-tolerant patients requiring continuous, around-the-clock opioid therapy. Clinical studies have specifically evaluated its efficacy and safety in patients with chronic osteoarthritis pain of the hip or knee.
