Overview

Exametazime is a small molecule chelating agent used to prepare the radiopharmaceutical technetium Tc 99m exametazime, which is employed as a diagnostic imaging agent. When combined with the radioisotope technetium-99m, it forms a lipophilic complex that can cross cell membranes and localize in tissues of interest. The primary clinical uses are for cerebral perfusion scintigraphy to detect altered regional cerebral blood flow (such as in stroke) and for leukocyte-labeled scintigraphy to help localize intra-abdominal infections and inflammatory bowel disease. The mechanism of action involves chelation of technetium Tc 99m by exametazime, allowing the resulting complex to be taken up by target tissues or cells (notably leukocytes), enabling their visualization via nuclear medicine imaging techniques[1][2][3][5][6].
