Excellagen is a highly purified, flowable topical gel composed of 2.6% (26 mg/mL) fibrillar bovine type I collagen. It is designed as an advanced wound care device for the management of a wide range of wounds, including partial and full-thickness wounds, pressure ulcers, venous ulcers, diabetic ulcers, chronic vascular ulcers, tunneled/undermined wounds, surgical wounds (such as donor sites/grafts and post-surgical dehiscence), trauma wounds (abrasions, lacerations, second-degree burns and skin tears), and draining wounds[1][2][3][4][5][7]. Mechanistically, Excellagen works by providing a structural scaffold that supports cellular infiltration and migration at the wound site. Upon application to the wound surface—especially after debridement in the presence of blood cells—it activates platelets which then release essential growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor. These growth factors promote cell migration and proliferation necessary for tissue repair[3][5]. The product is supplied in pre-filled sterile syringes for single-use topical application. Excellagen was originally developed by Olaregen Therapeutix; it has also been associated with Cardium Therapeutics (later Gene Biotherapeutics) during its development history[4][6]. Generex Biotechnology acquired Olaregen Therapeutix to market Excellagen[5].
