Overview

Excellarate (also known as GAM501) is a DNA-activated collagen gel developed for the topical treatment of chronic wounds, specifically diabetic foot ulcers. It utilizes a replication-deficient adenoviral vector (Ad5) to deliver the human platelet-derived growth factor-B (PDGF-B) gene directly to the wound site. The vector is formulated within a bovine collagen matrix, which serves as both a delivery vehicle and a scaffold for tissue repair. Once applied, the adenovector transfects local cells, inducing the transient expression and secretion of PDGF-B protein. This growth factor stimulates angiogenesis, fibroblast proliferation, and granulation tissue formation, thereby accelerating the healing of non-healing ulcers. Originally developed by Tissue Repair Company and later acquired by Cardium Therapeutics, the product completed Phase 2b clinical trials but development was subsequently discontinued.
