Excipial Hydrolotion is a moisturizing oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion designed to hydrate and protect the skin barrier. In clinical settings, such as trials conducted by the University of Bern, it is utilized as an institutional standard-of-care topical treatment for the prevention and management of radiation dermatitis in patients undergoing radiotherapy, particularly for breast cancer. The formulation typically contains urea (often at a 2% concentration) and lipids, functioning as both an emollient and a humectant. It works by increasing the water-binding capacity of the stratum corneum and restoring the lipid film on the skin surface, which helps mitigate the dryness and irritation associated with radiation-induced skin damage.
