Drug intelligence / Profile preview
EXCL-100 is a sustained-release oral tablet formulation of pirfenidone developed by Excalibur Pharmaceuticals. Pirfenidone is an antifibrotic agent primarily indicated for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). The mechanism of action involves inhibition of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β)–stimulated collagen synthesis, decreasing the production of fibrogenic mediators and reducing fibroblast proliferation. EXCL-100 was evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial comparing its pharmacokinetics and bioavailability to Esbriet (pirfenidone) in healthy volunteers[1].
