Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Exenatide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works by activating the GLP-1 receptor to increase insulin secretion, decrease glucagon secretion, and slow gastric emptying to improve glycemic control. Exenatide is available in both immediate-release (Byetta) and extended-release (Bydureon, Bydureon BCise) formulations. The FDA approved exenatide on April 28, 2005. Bydureon, the brand name product of extended-release exenatide in an injectable suspension, was discontinued in 2021, while Bydureon BCise, an auto-injector extended-release formulation, remains available.
