Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Exenatide extended release is a long-acting formulation of exenatide, a synthetic version of exendin-4 that acts as a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Developed by Amylin Pharmaceuticals (now part of AstraZeneca), it is primarily indicated for the improvement of glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The extended-release formulation utilizes poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLG) microspheres to provide a continuous release of the peptide over several weeks, allowing for once-weekly subcutaneous administration. Its mechanism involves enhancing glucose-dependent insulin secretion, suppressing glucagon secretion, and slowing gastric emptying, thereby reducing both postprandial and fasting glucose levels. Beyond diabetes, the extended-release formulation is being investigated for neuroprotective effects in neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's disease.
