Overview

Exenatide + desferrioxamine is an experimental combination formulation consisting of exenatide (a synthetic version of exendin-4, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist) and desferrioxamine (an iron chelator), delivered together via a nanoparticle system. This combination is designed to target the brain for potential treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease. Exenatide acts by activating the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor, conferring neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, while desferrioxamine chelates excess iron, reducing iron-induced oxidative stress and neuronal damage. The nanoparticle formulation is engineered for improved blood-brain barrier penetration and enhanced targeting of brain regions affected in Parkinson's disease. This dual approach aims for synergistic therapeutic effects: reducing neuroinflammation, mitigating oxidative damage, and improving neuronal survival and motor function in disease models.
