Overview

A combination therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus that pairs exenatide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, with insulin. Exenatide works by stimulating insulin release from pancreatic beta cells in a glucose-dependent manner, slowing gastric emptying, and reducing glucagon secretion. When combined with insulin, particularly long-acting insulin like insulin glargine (Lantus), this therapy can provide complementary mechanisms for glycemic control. The combination has been shown to reduce HbA1c levels by approximately 1.1 percentage points. However, exenatide should not be combined with rapid-acting or short-acting insulin analogs.
