Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bydureon is an extended-release formulation of exenatide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works by enhancing glucose-dependent insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells, suppressing inappropriately elevated glucagon secretion, and slowing gastric emptying. The medication is formulated using biodegradable microsphere technology that allows for once-weekly dosing. The microspheres are composed of polylactide co-glycolide acid polymer that gradually degrades, releasing exenatide continuously over time.
