Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Exenatide microspheres is a long-acting formulation of exenatide, designed to provide extended release of the medication for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. ## Formulation and Mechanism Exenatide microspheres work by encapsulating exenatide in poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres, which gradually release the medication over time. This sustained-release system enables once-weekly administration instead of twice-daily injections required for standard exenatide. The microspheres are designed to create a steady blood concentration profile with reduced peak concentrations and more consistent drug delivery. ## Clinical Use Exenatide microspheres are used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The medication works by stimulating insulin secretion when blood sugar levels are high, suppressing glucagon secretion, potentially enhancing beta-cell mass, slowing gastric emptying, decreasing appetite, and modulating glucose trafficking in peripheral tissues.
