Overview

XF-73 Dermal (exeporfinium chloride) is a novel synthetic di-cationic porphyrin derivative developed as a topical antimicrobial agent. It exhibits rapid and potent bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii. The drug acts primarily by binding to bacterial cell membranes, causing membrane disruption and rapid loss of potassium and ATP from the cells. This leads to inhibition of DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis with subsequent loss of cell viability. Additionally, due to its porphyrin structure, it can act as a photosensitizer under light exposure to generate reactive oxygen species that further damage bacterial cells[1][4][6]. XF-73 Dermal is being developed for the prevention and treatment of serious skin infections associated with open wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), burns, superficial skin infections (including impetigo), acne, atopic dermatitis with secondary infection, infected lacerations or wounds including those caused by MRSA or other resistant organisms[2][3][8]. Destiny Pharma is leading development in collaboration with China Medical Systems Holdings Limited for China-focused programs.
