Overview

Exmer is a branded generic formulation of meropenem, an ultra-broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic developed by Excella Life Sciences for the Indian pharmaceutical market. Meropenem exerts its bactericidal activity by covalently binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), specifically PBP 1, 2, 3, and 4, which are essential enzymes involved in the synthesis and cross-linking of the bacterial peptidoglycan cell wall. This disruption leads to cell wall weakening, osmotic instability, and subsequent bacterial cell lysis. Exmer is administered intravenously and is indicated for the treatment of severe, complicated bacterial infections, including bacterial meningitis, intra-abdominal infections, pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections, and skin and skin structure infections.
