EXN-44 is an investigational small molecule formulation of levodopa being developed by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. As a dopamine precursor, levodopa is transported across the blood-brain barrier and converted into dopamine by the enzyme aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (DOPA decarboxylase). This process replenishes depleted dopamine levels in the brain, specifically within the striatum, to alleviate the motor symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease. EXN-44 is currently being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials in Italy, where it is being compared to standard-of-care treatments like Sinemet (carbidopa/levodopa) and other investigational formulations such as EXN-32 to assess its efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetic profile in patients experiencing motor fluctuations.
