Overview

Exo-HWS is an exosome-based therapeutic product composed of extracellular vesicles derived from human Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs). Developed by researchers at Universitas Indonesia, these exosomes contain a cargo of bioactive molecules, including proteins and miRNAs, that facilitate intercellular communication and mediate regenerative and immunomodulatory effects. In the context of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), Exo-HWS is being investigated for its potential to improve glycemic control by reducing systemic inflammatory markers such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP), while promoting pancreatic beta-cell function and insulin sensitivity. The therapy is administered via monthly intravenous bolus injections and has been studied both as a standalone adjunctive therapy and in combination with other cell-derived exosomes, such as those from human umbilical vein endothelial cells (Exo-HUVEC).
