Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Exocarpium Citri Grandis is the dried peel of the unripe fruit of Citrus grandis (L.) Osbeck or Citrus grandis 'Tomentosa', widely known in traditional Chinese medicine as Huajuhong. It contains a variety of bioactive compounds including flavonoids (notably naringin), alkaloids, volatile oils, polysaccharides, and coumarins[3][5]. Traditionally used for hundreds of years to treat respiratory diseases such as cough and phlegm disorders[1], it has demonstrated multiple pharmacological effects in modern studies. These include antiallergic activity (validated by inhibition of cell degranulation and nitric oxide release), anti-inflammatory effects, antioxidant properties, lipid-lowering actions, cardiotonic effects, diuretic activity, antiarrhythmic potential[2][5], and possible hypoglycemic action. Mechanistic studies suggest that its antiallergic effect may be mediated through modulation of mitogen-activated protein kinase 14 (MAPK14) and matrix metalloprotease 9 (MMP9)[2]. Exocarpium Citri Grandis is also used in food products.
