EXP017 is a virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine candidate designed for the prevention of malaria caused by *Plasmodium falciparum*. Developed by ExpreS2ion Biotechnologies in collaboration with the University of Oxford, the vaccine utilizes the proprietary ExpreS2 protein expression system (based on *Drosophila melanogaster* S2 cells) to produce the Reticulocyte-binding protein Homologue 5 (RH5) antigen. This antigen is displayed on a highly immunogenic mi3 VLP scaffold using SpyTag/SpyCatcher conjugation technology. RH5 is a highly conserved protein essential for the invasion of human erythrocytes by the malaria parasite. By inducing potent neutralizing antibodies that block the interaction between RH5 and its human receptor, Basigin (CD147), EXP017 aims to prevent the blood-stage infection responsible for clinical malaria symptoms.
