Expanded Activated Lymphocytes (EAL) is a form of immunotherapy that involves the expansion and activation of a patient's own lymphocytes outside the body (ex vivo). The process begins with collecting lymphocytes from the patient's peripheral blood, followed by laboratory manipulation to activate and multiply these cells. The resulting product consists predominantly of CD8+ T cells, which are critical components of the adaptive immune system. The activation process involves stimulating the T cells using antibodies against CD3 and CD28 surface molecules, which mimics the natural activation signals these cells would receive from antigen-presenting cells. This stimulation, combined with cytokines like IL-2, triggers rapid proliferation and activation of the lymphocytes. Once expanded and activated, these cells are reinfused into the patient where they can potentially recognize and target cancer cells or other disease-causing agents.
