Overview

Expanded activated (EA) NK cells are a form of cellular immunotherapy that involves the isolation, ex vivo expansion, and activation of natural killer cells. These cells are part of the innate immune system and can recognize and kill abnormal cells including cancer cells and virus-infected cells without prior sensitization. The expansion process typically uses cytokines like IL-15, IL-2, and CD137L to significantly increase NK cell numbers and enhance their cytotoxic capabilities. EA NK cells can be used in both autologous (patient's own cells) and allogeneic (donor-derived) settings, with the latter offering potential as an 'off-the-shelf' therapy. They can be administered alone or in combination with monoclonal antibodies to enhance antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC).
