Expanded allogeneic adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AT-MSCs) is an advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) consisting of mesenchymal stem cells harvested from donor adipose tissue and expanded ex vivo. Developed by the Andalusian Network for Design and Translation of Advanced Therapies (Red Andaluza de Diseño y Traslación de Terapias Avanzadas – Fundación Progreso y Salud) in Spain, this cell therapy is designed to leverage the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties of MSCs. It aims to suppress the overactivated immune response and cytokine storm associated with severe or critical COVID-19 pneumonia. The therapy is administered intravenously and has been evaluated in Phase I/II clinical trials to assess safety and efficacy in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection.
